    1857-D AU55 NGC. Variety 42-HH. A meager mintage of 17,046 Liberty half eagles was accomplished at the Dahlonega Mint in 1857, making the 1857-D one of the most challenging issues of the series. This coin exhibits the date placed to the left, with the 7 relatively far from the bust, identifying Variety 42-HH. This impressive Choice AU example is well-detailed and lightly worn, and the lightly abraded lemon-yellow surfaces retain strong traces of original mint luster. Census: 18 in 55, 36 finer (2/18).
