Description
A rare shape Charlotte Rhead for Burgess & Leigh art deco biscuit barrel/cookie jar decorated in a rare pattern. The pattern (Number 4768) is known as 'Orchard' and consists of orange coloured apples and green leaves with tube lining in black. Up until 1987 there had been no known examples of this pattern. The barrel is 6" tall to the top of the finial, 6 3/4" wide across the lugs and the base is 4" in diameter. The condition is very good, there are no chips, cracks,crazing or restoration. The only blemish is a small area of paint flaked off from one of the orange apples on the lid. This small area is about 6mm by 5mm. The cane handle shows no wear whatsoever. The base is fully marked with the Registration number 766416 which indicates a date of 1931, the pattern number 4768, the Burleigh Ware beehive mark in green and Charlotte Rhead's signature ' L. Rhead'. Charlotte was known by her family name of Lottie and commonly signed her work this way. I believe that the biscuit barrel has probably never been used for its intended purpose. It has been in my possession for the past thirty years and has been stored in cabinets during the whole of the time.
