Fisher Flouring Mills was started in 1911 on Harbor Island in Elliott Bay at the mouth of the Duwamish waterway in Seattle by Oliver David Fisher from Missouri. By 1917 the mill was grinding out 5,000 barrels of flour a day, making it the largest mill in the West. In 1926 the Fisher brothers founded KOMO radio station, advertising their flour on the station, ultimately acquiring ownership of 26 radio stations and 12 tv stations under the name Fisher Communications. The flour mill was sold in 2001 to Pendleton Flour Mills, based out of Oregon. Fisher also popularized their flour with scones they first sold at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, launching what would become a favorite of county fair goers all across the West. Today Fisher Fair Mix is sold in stores in the familiar red plaid box bag.
