Leader of the first Russian expedition to sail around the globe was Adam Johann von Krusenstern (1770–1846), a Baltic-German born and raised in Estonia. The expedition ships, the Neva and the Nadezhda, sailed from Kronstadt on 6 August 1803 and returned three years and twelve days later. The aim of the expedition was to take a Russian mission to Japan, to deliver goods to Russian settlements in Alaska and to sail around the world. The voyage made major contributions to various sciences. But the most important achievement was a South Sea Atlas Krusenstern completed at his landed estate in Kiltsi, Estonia in 1816–1822, a publication regarded as the best collection of Pacific Ocean navigation maps until the beginning of the 20th century.
